Netflix SWOT Analysis

Nov 6, 2024

Today we are going to breakdown Netflix SWOT analysis. With this analysis, it is possible to assess the strategic positioning of a company based on internal and external factors.

Strengths

Let's start by breaking down the strengths. Netflix has a well known and global brand, recognized in many locations. On top of that, the company has a strong footprint, being present in more than 190 countries, as shown in the 2023 financial report. Another strength is the company's original content. Netflix has produced highly acclaimed shows such as Stranger Things and Round 6, which have received positive evaluations from the public. Lastly, the recommendation algorithm enables the company to keep users engaged by suggesting shows that match their preferences.

Weaknesses

Jumping to weaknesses - although original content helps attract new users and retain current subscribers, it comes with high production costs, which can be seen as a weakness. Additionally, when it comes to third-party content, Netflix relies heavily on content creators for licensing agreements.

Opportunities

In the opportunities section, Netflix can continue investing in the gaming industry, bringing new games for the platform or partnering with game studios to launch games based on its original shows. By leveraging its original series, Netflix can also expand initiatives such as merchandise and immersive experiences. A good example of this is Stranger Things: The Experience. Lastly, the company can utilize its platform to promote live-streaming content, including sports events, for example.

Threats

When we look to the market, Netflix threats can be the following: Piracy, direct competition, the new ways of entertainment and the subscription saturation. Content piracy can be harmful for Netflix, as users avoid paying a subscription fee to access the content. Competition in the streaming space is also a threat - companies like Disney and Amazon are heavily investing on their streaming platforms. New ways of entertainment are also rising, and customers can choose to spend their free time in another activity instead of Netflix - like playing a Nintendo video game, for example. Lastly, we are living in an era where everything is becoming subscription. Many customers are canceling their subscription plans in multiple services, and that can be a threat to Netflix.
